Is your relation to writing of love? Or do you loathe it? Well, I’ve been there and can assure you it is entirely possible to improve your writing. Maybe you won’t fall in love with it, but you can definitely become good at it.

Writing in English is a daunting challenge for many of us. I have always been fearful of writing because it requires semantic precision*, and it would take me at least 4 hours to write a “simple” essay. Rarely did I know what to write, so I turned to reading extensively to expand my repertoire of ideas and improve my English writing skills.

My Journey to the C2 Exam

Few people know that back in 2015, I wanted to further hone my English. Thus, I enrolled in a course to pass the Cambridge C2 Proficiency Exam, the pinnacle of language mastery. Despite my tutor’s feedback, I decided to opt out of the exam because I believed, to my core, that I would never be able to pass the C2 writing paper within the time limit. How on earth would I finish in 45 minutes?

Long story short, my English did improve over time; however, my fear of writing essays and exam anxiety persisted. I knew I needed to find a way to overcome my fear and boost my English writing confidence.

Then, in 2020, I decided to face the dreaded C2 exam again. Like many language learners, I studied harder and longer while waiting for the “right” time to try again. But what did I do differently this time?

I started writing C2 writing tasks weekly—grabbing the bull by the horns and confronting my fear of writing in English head-on. I also began journaling—something I had never done before. You might be wondering: how effective was it?

Breaking Through: Strategies That Worked

At first, I wasn’t entirely sure if it would work. Still, I understood that embracing new challenges was crucial for improving my English writing skills and overcoming my fear of writing. So I trusted the process and kept practicing daily.

Finally, after many ups and downs, trials and tribulations, I sat the C2 exam and passed. Today, I am no longer petrified of exam writing, and I even maintain the healthy habit of journaling in English—which has become a key part of my language learning routine.

As my confidence grew through regular journaling, I eventually took my writing a step further and started my own personal blog, The B2 and Beyond, which became another powerful outlet for practicing and refining my writing skills.

What I discovered throughout this journey is that fear doesn’t have to define us as language learners. I simply needed to learn when to step back and when to step up. I worked on my mindset, challenged my limiting beliefs, and practiced relentlessly to improve my English writing proficiency.

For all those striving to improve their English writing skills, I want to say: find what truly works for you. Whether it’s consistent practicejournaling, or taking formal courses, the key is persistence. Remember that learning English is a marathon, not a sprint—just like life itself.

Final thoughts: No matter your current level—whether you’re B1, B2, or aiming for C1 or C2—there is always room for growth. Overcoming the fear of writing and building your English writing confidence takes time, patience, and dedication. Keep pushing forward, and you will see progress. As you conquer your fear of writing, remember that this is just one essential component of the larger journey from good to great—mastering advanced English with the confidence, precision, and sophistication needed to excel in any context. Your English language journey is uniquely yours—embrace it.
