For instance, if you are a teacher who only works with A1 and A2, you’ll be totally comfortable to do so if your English is B2. According to some experts, including Cambridge University, the teacher’s level of English has to be 2 levels above the level he/she is going to teach.

However, I do have an issue with that opinion when it comes to teaching C1 and C2. Of course, if you hold a C2, theoretically you are more knowledgeable than a C1. Nevertheless, if you work with C2, the road may be a bit bumpier and more winding since we don’t have a C3 or even a D1, whatever would they call a level above C2. With that in mind, I am far from saying that there is no way of developing yourself – sure there is. But the million-dollar question is: how many of us keep studying English and challenging ourselves to keep or further our C2 knowledge?

The never-ending road of learning

It’s a hard truth to accept that there is no end to learning because everyone wants to meet the finishing line. Sad but true, though, is the fact that if you stop practicing, you’ll lose everything or at least a part of what you worked your a** off to achieve.

As some people say, “there’s a fine line between C1 and C2“; however small they may paint it, I would dare to say that there’s an ocean between these two levels and to get there it’ll require a lot of dedication, time, and effort. And truth be told, there’ll be an immense number of times you’ll feel the ups (keep going) and downs (quitting) of learning a new skill, truth be told.

Your goals define your path

Going back to C2 or not C2, it all comes down to what your work reality and your plans for your career are. If you intend to teach B1 and B2 comfortably, having a higher level of knowledge is preferable to avoid those uncomfortable moments in class when students try to challenge you. Whether you feel fine on your career ladder or not, I would encourage you to go the extra mile. It is rewarding to be able to have a good level of discussion with knowledgeable people. Because probably you know, by now, that in languages there’s no absolute right or wrong; nuances and intentions are conveyed in small details.

Ultimately, the choice to pursue higher proficiency levels in English is a personal one, driven by your ambitions and career objectives. While it may be comfortable to stay within your current level, pushing yourself beyond that can open new doors and enhance your teaching journey. Stay dedicated, keep learning, and remember that your growth as a teacher directly contributes to the success and inspiration of your students.

After listening to Macmillan’s podcast

After listening to Macmillan’s Podcast, what caught my eye was the assertion that the C2 Proficiency is not merely another English exam; it’s an academic assessment tailored for the professional world. Perhaps this is why it is predominantly taken by non-native English teachers globally. Teaching or studying for the C2 Proficiency offers an in-depth exploration of the English language’s intricacies, benefiting both teachers and students alike. It is crucial to be self-aware and carefully evaluate your readiness to teach or take this exam, as the challenges will be significant on both fronts. If not adequately prepared, consider strengthening your English foundation through a preparatory course or self-study.

The challenges of C2 teaching

Students often grapple with insecurity due to the extensive range of vocabulary, including idioms, fixed expressions, and collocations. They may feel that despite their progress, there remains a vast expanse of unknown territory. This overwhelming and persistent feeling is common. Nonetheless, those who undertake the C2 exam are typically advanced language learners with intrinsic motivation to advance further, often possessing a sharper ability to identify distractors than their teachers. Unlike other exams, the C2 Proficiency is less driven by extrinsic motivation, as it is not frequently required in real-world scenarios. However, non-native teachers often pursue it to enhance their professional standing.

Being a C2 teacher is demanding. It necessitates experience and the humility to acknowledge gaps in one’s knowledge. Teachers at this level may rely more on the teacher’s book and require deeper preparation for classes.

About resources and listening

As it is challenging to find appropriate C2 material for all the skills, listening is the one that may be considered the most challenging for these task takers. Even though I personally disagree with the speakers’ point of view, I do believe that the lack of vocabulary may obscure the meaning of listening and reading passages.

The listening component of the C2 exam is particularly challenging, compounded by the limited resources available. Therefore, meticulous planning is essential, and students should be encouraged to become autonomous learners, maintaining vocabulary books and seeking answers independently.

Final reflections on C2

The role of the teacher is pivotal in adjusting students’ goals at the C2 level, especially given the absence of a specific word list. Overuse of idioms and set phrases can render students’ writing incomprehensible, a common pitfall. Although adolescents can achieve C2 proficiency, they may lack the maturity to effectively discuss and write about complex topics, which is why Cambridge University restricts the exam to individuals 18 and older. C2 students should be capable of debating and critically engaging with content, and teachers must be prepared to be questioned.

Utilizing AI to compare students’ writing can provide valuable insights. Teachers must exhibit a genuine interest in a broad range of topics and be able to engage with them, acting as facilitators or guides in the learning process. Embrace the phrase “I don’t know” and recognize that mistakes are part of the learning journey. Foster a collaborative learning environment where students feel empowered to say, “You tell me!” and share their insights before the teacher offers theirs. This approach cultivates a deeper understanding and mutual respect in the classroom.

",
