So what does Spaced Repetition look like in practice?
Spaced Repetition (or spaced retrieval practice) means returning to what you’ve learned at carefully timed intervals rather than studying material intensively just once. You revisit it at strategically increasing intervals, based on the Ebbinghaus’s forgetting curve (where research shows we forget ~50% of new information within an hour, ~70% within 24 hours and ~75% within one week).
What makes this so effective is not just repetition — it’s timing. When you try to retrieve something just as you’re about to forget it, your brain has to work harder to bring that information back. That effort strengthens the memory.
This is exactly what research in language learning has consistently shown: learners who use spaced retrieval outperform those who rely on rereading or passive review.
In other words, it’s not about studying more — it’s about when and how you return to what you’ve learned.
Higher-proficiency learners tend to do this naturally. They plan their reviews, revisit material strategically, and as a result, retain more — even when their total study time is exactly the same.
This is why retrieval practice — whether through flashcards, quick quizzes, or short recall tasks — consistently outperforms passive rereading.
Here’s how you can start applying this in your own study routine:
